Biosafety and Biosecurity in the era of One Health

The Malaysian Conference on Biosafety and Biosecurity 2026 (MCBB2026) builds upon the foundation established during MCBB023, which centred on the theme of One Health as an integrated and unifying platform for biosafety and biosecurity applications. MCBB2023 successfully created awareness on the importance of adopting a holistic and collaborative approach that balances and optimises the health of people, animals, and ecosystems.

Serving as a strategic continuation of these efforts, MCBB2026 shifts the focus from awareness to implementation. The conference emphasises strengthening competencies, enhancing institutional readiness, and fostering multidisciplinary collaboration to build a more resilient biosafety and biosecurity ecosystem at national and regional levels.

MCBB2026 aims to provide participants with a practical and accurate understanding of internationally aligned good practices in biosafety and biosecurity. Through expert-led sessions and knowledge-sharing by experienced professionals, the conference will address current and emerging challenges while promoting actionable solutions and capacity development. Key focus areas include:
  • Governance, regulatory frameworks, and policy development;
  • Emerging biological threats, including synthetic biology and dual-use concerns;
  • Emerging technologies and innovation, particularly the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in biosafety and biosecurity applications; and
  • Strengthening collaboration, competency, and preparedness across sectors under the One Health approach.

Objectives:
1. To highlight developments in biosafety and biosecurity science and policy.
2. To address current and emerging biological threats, including dual-use research, synthetic biology, and infectious disease risks.
3. To enhance institutional and national capabilities for biosafety and biosecurity implementation.
4. To foster regional and international collaboration on biological risk management.
